Large amount of water can enter tunnel during construction when encountering harsh conditions, which act as nature channels for water transportation

This could lead to project delay or economic loss and even personal casualty loss if no special action is taken. Therefore, grouting is introduced to reduce the hydraulic conductivity and enhance the strength of rock body which can also lead to substantial cost reduction associated with construction and maintenance.

However, though the grouting cost is comparatively lower than other water controlling methods, it can still take a large portion of the overall project budget. The main reason should be attributed to the complexity, and thus conservative grouting design is usually preferred.

Therefore, extensive study has been conducted to enrich fundamental theory and render practical guidance to rock grouting. The term rock grouting in many works usually indicates pre-excavation grouting.

In order to improve the effectiveness of practical grouting and its economic efficiency, various models have been built for grouting quality evaluation in targeted areas. This includes empirical, analytical & numerical models, data analytics and data mining in recent years.

In this webinar, various models and grouting criteria will be introduced.

About the Speaker

Dr Xiao Fei received his Bachelor’s Degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China), Master’s Degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University (Shanghai, China), and PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). He  is currently Associate Professor at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China.

Dr Xiao has experience in researching on the system stability of deep-sea marine structure in ocean engineering, controlling of underground water seepage during rock excavation, system for belowground LNG storage.

His interest involves analytical and numerical simulation, data analytics, data mining and multi-physics analysis, and has published more than 30 papers in different areas.

His major research was in the project for “True Improvement in Grouting High-pressure Technology for tunnelling” and “Underground LNG storage”.
