DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE CAST IN-SITU BALANCED CANTILEVER BOX GIRDER BRIDGE SUPPORTED ON INTEGRAL CANTILEVER CROSSHEAD

During the 60-minute webinar, the speaker will explain the design and construction of the prestressed cast in-situ box girder supported on cantilever crosshead (indirect support) built by balanced cantilever construction method in Melaka, Malaysia.

The speaker will discuss the design and detailing as well as the construction of the cast in-situ multiple-span segmental box girder bridge on Form Travelers (Bridge Builders). Construction sequence, typical construction cycle for this cast in-situ box girder construction and the operation of the form travelers  and as well as the construction related matters such as temporary fixity system, box girder dimension control; precamber design and camber chart (Christmas Tree Chart) will also be discuss during the webinar.

INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION METHODS DEPLOYED TO CONSTRUCT A NEW PUMPING STATION AND INTAKE TOWER WITHIN A WORKING RESERVOIR IN HONG KONG

This presentation describes the construction of a new pumping station and intake tower within Plover Cove Reservoir for the Water Supplies Department of Hong Kong. The area is a designated Country Park requiring significant environmental considerations. The reservoir remained operational during the construction when the water level was unrestrained  over a maximum range of 18 metres.

To meet this engineering challenge major temporary works and unusual construction techniques were deployed.

The structure of the pump station was constructed within a major temporary works jacket above water level and progressively lowered into the reservoir to join with pre-installed piles, underwater. The intake tower was constructed within a cofferdam built in reverse sequence.

During the construction of the cofferdam and intake tower, 3.3 m diameter shaft was sunk concurrently to connect with a tunnel, surge shaft and underground pumping station also included in the overall Scope of Works.

CASE STUDIES ON SEAPORTS AND OTHER MARITIME STRUCTURES

Singapore have vast experience in design and construction of Seaports and other related Maritime Structures. Main topics to be discussed in this presentation are: General Requirements in Code of Practice for Maritime Structures, Design and Construction of Open Piled Wharves supported with Spun Piles, Concrete Blockwork Quaywalls and Concrete Caisson Quaywalls, Dredging of Navigation Channels, Land Reclamation, Soil Improvement and Shore-Protection and Futuristic Maritime Structures etc

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ir. Dr. Low Hin Foo graduated from Monash University, Malaysia with a PhD(Structure). He graduated from University Malaya with an Honours degree in Civil Engineering.  Since then he has almost 20 years of design and construction experience in various types of bridges, as well as prestressed building structures both locally and abroad. He was the Technical Manager for prestressing specialist contractor, BBR Construction Systems (M) Sdn Bhd; and he is currently the Principal Engineer of a bridge consultancy firm in Singapore, OS Alliance Pte Ltd, and the Group Managing Director of OSD Consultants Group in Malaysia.

Ir. Dr. Low has vast experience in the design and construction of long span bridges using precast and cast in-situ prestressed segmental box girder (SBG) and he is familiar with the design of integral bridge with prestressed girders made continuous. Besides, he has huge design experience in the design of prestressed structures for large commercial projects and high-rise towers, particularly in handling the design of prestressed flat slab or flat plate systems with irregular column grids, including prestressed transfer plate and raft foundation as well as their lateral response with columns of high-rise buildings.

Mr John Mundy has over 60 years experience in heavy Civil Engineering Construction at all levels of the engineering discipline and management and over thirty years of which has been gained in the Asian market. His  experience include the construction of viaducts, tunnels, bridges, roads, surface and underground railway works, dams, hydroelectric power stations, marine and port works, and buildings. Experience includes project management, contract coordination and administration, planning and programming, tendering, quality control, man management, safety and environmental control.

Following a strong career in the UK, the latter decades have been spent in Asia as Project Manager/Project Director on various multi-partner Joint Ventures, managing the construction of: - KCRC Tai Lam Rail Tunnel, Western Harbour Crossing, Kwai Chung Container Port Terminals 8 and 9, Tate’s Cairn Road Tunnel, Plover Cove Reservoir Pumping Stations and Intake Structures, and Sai Wan Ho MTRC station Concourse in Hong Kong, and Noida to Greater Noida elevated Metro rail project in India. In addition, he have been engaged in project advisory roles to international contractors in Hong Kong, Taiwan, India and South East Asia.

Er. Dr. Ho Kwong Meng had 30 years working experience in The Port of Singapore Authority / PSA Corporation Ltd and had another 10 years working experience in Surbana Jurong Consultants Pte Ltd (including Jurong Consultants, Surbana International & the merged entity). He is currently managing his own consulting firm - Port and Building Consultants and he is also an Associate Faculty of SIT currently. He is currently an IES Council Member, Chairman of IES/ISTRUCTE Joint Committee and Chairman of Overseas Infrastructure Project Technical Committee.
