Advancing Safer Demolition Practices Through Standards

Share

On 27 July 2026, the IES Standards Development Organisation (IES-SDO) was honoured to launch SS 557:2026 – Code of Practice for Demolition. 🎉

The event was co-organised with the IES/IStructE Joint Committee and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), in collaboration with the Singapore Standards Council and Enterprise Singapore, and supported by the National University of Singapore’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

SS 557:2026 provides the industry with a practical framework to identify these risks early and carry out demolition works more safely and responsibly.

This revised standard will benefit the industry by:
– Identifying structural risks earlier, through comprehensive demolition planning and structural stability reports.
– Supporting safer demolition works, by strengthening guidance on demolition sequencing and temporary structural supports.
– Improving coordination and accountability, with clearer guidance for managing demolition activities and deliberate collapse.
– Promoting more responsible demolition practices, by addressing environmental considerations alongside structural safety.
