IES – Standards Development Organisation (IES-SDO)
The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) has been appointed by Enterprise Singapore, the national standards body, as the Standards Development Organisation (SDO) to provide secretariat support for the Building and Construction Standards Committee (BCSC) from January 2015, and the Transportation Standards Committee (TpSC) from November 2021.
Building and Construction Standards Committee (BCSC)
The BCSC plays a key role in developing, promoting and facilitatiting the implementation of standards to lead the building and construction industry towards sustainability and improve quality, safety and productivity. It also supports standardisation efforts in emerging areas such as Smart Infrastructure and Green Buildings. Its scope of standardisation includes:
- Architectural works
- Building maintenance and management
- Building structures and substructures
- Civil and geotechnical works
- Construction management
To drive these efforts, it’s five Technical Committees and Working Groups under BCSC develop and promote new standards and technical references. They also monitor and participate in the review of international standards relevant to Singapore.
Transportation Standards Committee (TpSC)
The TpSC looks at developing new standards and technical references under 3 key areas to improve the safety, reliability, and productivity of transportation sector in Singapore
- Operations and maintenance of railway systems
- Alignment of operational requirements for autonomous and electric vehicles
- Support the development and provision of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and relevant platforms and servicesto support national transportation goals such as the Land Transport Authority (LTA)’s Smart Mobility 2030.
Industry Engagement and Outreach
Guided by the industry-led Singapore Standards Council, IES-SDO facilitates the development, promotion, and adoption of standards to meet industry and regulatory needs. It actively engages IES members, industry partners, and stakeholders through various outreach initiatives, including:
- Leadership and standards education talks at Institutions of Higher Learning
- Symposiums and industry events
- Overseas study trips to promote knowledge exchange and best practices
IES-SDO remains committed to advancing Singapore’s standards landscape by fostering collaboration and innovation within the industry.
