My Waterway@ Punggol

A scenic waterway flowing through the heart of Punggol, My Waterway@Punggol is the town’s centrepiece and the key to its transformation into a Waterfront Town of the 21st Century. The first of its kind in Singapore, its design is anchored in environmental sustainability and embraces the three conceptual elements of People, Water, and Green.

Taking only 2.5 years to complete, the adoption of green construction and environmentally sustainable practices has resulted in construction savings of S$40 million, putting the total construction cost of My Waterway@ Punggol at S$225 million.

This “Venice of Singapore” is a picturesque sanctuary for play and rest. Setting new standards for a better living environment, its meandering 4.2km promenade integrates seamlessly with housing, amenities and communal spaces.

A testament to HDB’s commitment of creating vibrant and sustainable towns, as well as active and cohesive communities, My Waterway@Punggol has transformed the aspiration of “Green Living by the Waters” into reality.

Challenges in Retrofit of Existing Metros with Platform Screen Doors

Singapore Technologies Electronics is a leading player in supplying Platform Screen Doors including retrofitting of existing metros with Half Height Platform Screen Doors in Asia Pacific Region.

They have successfully retrofitted existing MRT stations in Taipei and Singapore and in the process of retrofitting stations in Bangkok sky train stations. Meticulous project planning, execution, numerous product and process innovations were the key for their success.

EMAS for Major Arterial Roads (RP 137)

EMAS for Major Arterial Roads (EMAS Arterial) is an extension of the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS). This is the first time Travel Time Information Display will be shown on major Arterial Roads.

It is achieved through technological advancements resulting from our understandings on Singapore traffic conditions. Capitalizing on system integration expertise and technologies and by interfacing with other existing systems, timing delays at traffic light junctions can be taken into account.

The system will provide motorists with real-time updates and information about traffic conditions on major arterial corridors and expressways, allowing them to make informed decisions on travelling routes; thus transforming driving behaviours and resulting in tremendous time and cost savings for the economy.

Our partnership with LTA in adopting the latest innovation and domain know-how greatly benefit motorists and is in alignment with LTA’s vision of a people-centred land transport system.

Next Generation Human-Computer Interface for Everyday Objects

The inventors from the Nanyang Technological University are recognized for their R&D efforts in developing techniques which allow one to convert everyday objects into touch interfaces.

This inter-disciplinary research involves the novel use of acoustics and vibration signal processing theories and can be applied to convert existing flat-panel displays to touch screens and 3D objects into touch interfaces.

The team is currently working towards the commercialization of this technology in the areas related to out-of-home advertising, F&B applications and entertainment systems.

Novel Upconverting Nanomaterials for Imaging, Point-of-Care Diagnostics and Therapy

Associate Professor Zhang Yong’s groundbreaking work in developing a novel upconversion nanoparticle technology for imaging, disease diagnostics and therapy has been internationally recognised and highly cited.

His team is amongst those at the forefront leading the world in this field of upconversion nanoparticle research and was the first to use the nanoparticles for animal imaging, photodynamic therapy and controlled gene delivery that were recently reported in the esteemed journals, Nature Medicine and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

For his outstanding contributions in developing this novel upconverting nanoparticle technology, Associate Professor Zhang Yong from the National University of Singapore, is awarded the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award 2012.

United World College of South East Asia, East Campus: Engineering a New Paradigm for a Green Learning Environment

United World College of South East Asia (East Campus) exemplifies a “green” school where students learn about sustainability in an interactive school learning environment.

The campus is designed with energy efficient technologies such as renewable solar thermal panels, elevated soccer field rainwater recycling catchment area, and one of the most energy efficient air-conditioning systems.

By means of integrating sustainable architectural and engineering innovations, the exemplary school campus design has helped the college to save an expected 3million kWh of energy annually.
