| Bioscrubbers – A Cost Effective and Environmentally Friendly Alternative to Chemical Scrubbers | |
| AroBIOS® is a biological process technology for the control of odorous gases, particularly from municipal waste water treatment facilities. Unlike conventional gas scrubbers, the AroBIOS technology does not require the use and storage of chemicals making it a more environmentally friendly odor control method. The AroBIOS process has been proven and tested at several wastewater treatment plants worldwide.

| Platform Technology in Tissue Engineered Scaffolds : Integration of Medical Imaging, Biomaterials and Advanced Manufacturing | |
| A breakthrough has been made in engineering porous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Prof Teoh from the Mechanical Engineering Department and Co-Chair of the Graduate Prog in Bioengineering, leading a team of 3 engineers and 3 clinicians from NUS, Temasek Poly and NUH, has succeeded in making a plug out of a bioresorbable material and shaped like a button mushroom to snap fit into holes created on the skull after neurosurgery. After 3 months, bone is formed and the hole is completely filled. More than 15 patients have received this implant. A new company, Osteopore Pte Ltd has been formed. | i-Transport System | |
| The development of the i-transport system is a joint collaboration between the Land Transport Authority and CET Technologies Pte Ltd. This is an advanced large-scale transportation system that fully integrates existing Intelligent Transport Systems such as the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS), Green Link Determining (GLIDE) System, Junction Electronic Eyes (J-Eyes) systems and TrafficScan into a unified platform. The system’s core capability is to support an efficient, fast and cost-effective means of co-ordinating traffic flow between expressways and arterial roads by using an area based traffic management concept. The incorporation of innovative systems such as an expert system, which provides automated decision support, and traffic simulation system that aids in scenario planning and prediction will help the traffic controllers to swiftly manage traffic incidents and hence minimise disruption to traffic flow. | Biogranulation – A Powerful and Versatile Biological Wastewater Treatment Innovation | |
| Biogranulation is a powerful and versatile engineering innovation for high-performance biological wastewater treatment developed by Professor Tay Joo Hwa and his team of researchers in Nanyang Technological University . Compact microbial aggregates called “granules” are cultivated in special bioreactors and can be customized to effectively treat different types of wastewaters. Biogranulation systems can be aerobic (with oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen), can handle high loads, can biodegrade a wide range of organic and inorganic substrates, can tolerate and degrade high concentrations of toxic chemicals, occupy a small footprint and can achieve rapid start-up within one to two weeks . | Advanced Laser Microfabrication and Nanoengineering Technology | |
| The key accomplishments are contamination-free laser disk tagging machines for magnetic disk product tracking; precise detection systems for advanced magnetic media properties and accurate & high-speed laser singulation for thin wafer & IC package dicing. These accomplishments are capable of resolving technological problems in the microelectronics, micro-channel fabrication for bio-medical industries as well as the data storage industries. | Development of a Miniature Machine Tool for Micro Machining | |
| Until recently, a work piece which requires multiple machining processes has to be fabricated using different machines. With the development of this innovative patent-pending miniature machine tool, multiple micro machining involving both conventional and non-conventional processes can be performed on the same machine. Using its proprietary controller, on-machine measuring devices and processes, complex miniaturized features less than the width of a hair can be produced with high precision. | Maximising the Land Use in Singapore | |
| The winning team has achieved outstanding results in R&D and project management. A new frontier in land use was made possible in Singapore with the creation of physical space – underground. Through the application of their research results, the development of the underground ammunition storage achieved greater land savings as compared to adopting the use of existing safety criteria for such underground development. The underground facility achieved a total land savings of 300 hectares in land-scarce Singapore. The new safety criteria developed for the underground facility have also won international recognition and have been incorporated in the revised NATO safety manual for underground ammunition storage. The use of underground space for other purposes such as oil and gas storage is also being explored. This will potentially optimize land use in Singapore.
