Whilst the ideal of adopting a zero-waste approach, on grounds of sustainable construction, is well understood, to achieve it in practice can be challenging. A great deal of research has been undertaken worldwide on recycled aggregates and their use in construction and the standards/codes are slowly becoming more receptive.
However, just as in the case of natural aggregates, it is important to understand how best to develop the use of recycled aggregates. Based on the vast amount of information, collated from over 1400 publications originating globally from over 65 countries, analysed and evaluated, and presented in over 600 print pages in a book form, this workshop aims to discuss the production, characteristics and use of recycled aggregates in mortar, concrete, geotechnics and road pavements. In addition, environmental impact arising from the use of the materials will be addressed.
References will be made to the related standards and codes, as well as case studies undertaken using recycled aggregates. The book, used as course notes, is structured in an incisive and easy to digest manner and is particularly suited for aggregate suppliers, ready-mixed concrete producers, design engineers, specifiers, contractors, as well as academics and researchers.

Professor Ravindra K Dhir OBE, an Emeritus Professor of the University of Dundee in the UK, also holds the position of adjunct professor at Trinity College Dublin Ireland and honorary professor at the University of Birmingham UK. As a founding Director of Concrete Technology Unit, at Dundee (1988-2008), his hallmark was the development of an internationally acknowledged Centre of Excellence with extensive research facilities, where he worked closely with industry in disseminating research into practice. He won many recognitions, awards and honours including the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Honorary Fellowships of the Institute of Concrete Technology of UK and Indian Concrete Institute. He was Chairman of Concrete Society, Scotland (1986-87) and President of Concrete Society, UK (2009-2010) and he serves on the Editorial Board of the Magazine of Concrete Research.
Dr Chao Qun Lye is Senior Technical Manager with G&W Group, Singapore, where he is responsible for R&D and Quality Control of cementitious products. He obtained his degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Birmingham UK, for his research in the use of recycled and secondary aggregates in concrete and how this may affect the load-dependent and load-independent deformation properties of concrete, such as elastic modulus, creep and shrinkage. He holds a strong interest in sustainability and innovation, applied to the use of cement additions such as fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and limestone as well as the use of recycled and secondary materials in concrete, geotechnics and road pavement applications.
