Description:
Design and Technical Discussion of Cross Laminated Timber
(12 STUs (Structural) / 14 PDUs - Approved
Synopsis
With the increasing awareness and effort of adoption of sustainable construction which will require less of natural resources and increase the reusability of engineered material, the Industry has been exploring the use of engineered wood products such as Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as readily available sustainable way of construction.
The workshop will be focusing on the potential benefits and possibilities of using engineered wood products for medium rise buildings. The goal of the workshop is to provide a general overview and understanding toward embracing the development of the structural design of Glulam and CLT buildings.
During the workshop, several calculation case-studies will be shown in order to help the participants to understand on the main concepts of timber engineering.
About the Speaker
Dr. Ermanno Acler is born in Trento, Italy, in 1981. He holds a Ph.D. degree in structural engineering by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Trento.
During his Ph.D. programme, he was involved in a prestigious research investigating the inter-relations of several types of connection systems used in the industry of the cross laminated timber buildings. This research was also carried out in collaboration and subsequently published with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of New Brunswick (Canada).
After his graduation, he started a technical consulting firm specialised in the timber industry. He is engaged with several consulting projects with companies in North America (USA and Haiti), Europe (Italy, France, Norway and Sweden). His major projects are in the structural design of CLT buildings (8 – 12 storeys) in Norway and Sweden a. He oversaw and developed the structural design as consultant for the NTU sports hall in Singapore
