IES EVENING TALK ON " CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES FOR STRUCTURES"
3 (STUs (Structural) - Approved / PDUs for PEs and CEngs - TBC

CONSTRUCTION OF COASTAL PROTECTION STRUCTURES

As one of the counter measures against rising sea levels caused by global warming, some of the existing coastal protection structures need to be rehabilitated and new or taller coastal structures have to be built. How to construct coastal protection structures in a cost-effective way becomes a challenge to civil engineers. In this talk, a case study for the construction of a breakwater using precast concrete segments in Shanghai will be presented. A conceptual design on the use of suction caissons for sea wall construction in relatively deep water in Singapore will also be introduced.

SPEAKER'S PROFILE

Dr. CHU Jian is a professor in geotechnical engineering and Associate Chair (Faculty) at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He is the Director of the Centre for Usable Space and the interim Co-Director of the NTU-JTC Industrial Infrastructure Innovation Centre at NTU.  Prof Chu also worked for Iowa State University, USA, from 2011 to 2014 as professor and James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering. He is currently the Vice Chair for ISSMGE TC217 on Land Reclamation and a Committee Member for ISSMGE Technical Committee TC211 on Ground Improvement. He is the Editor, Co-Editor or Editorial Board Member for 9 international journals and has delivered over 60 keynote or invited lectures at international conferences. He received the R. M. Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society in 2004 and the Outstanding Geotechnical Engineer Award in 2018 from the Geotechnical Society of Singapore.

REPAIR AND RETROFIT OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES TO RECENT EUROCODE GUIDE (EN1504)

In the era of aging infrastructures in developed countries (in Europe, Japan, USA), there arise a crucial need for maintenance of reinforced concrete especially in the areas of repair & retrofit of structures built several decades ago especially concerning concrete durability and its long-term performance for sustainability and economics consideration. This presentation will share on the principles and methodology adopted in the current systematic approach adopted in the recent Eurocode EN1504 on repair and retrofitting of concrete structures.

SPEAKER'S PROFILE

Dr. KONG Kian Hau is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). One of his major research focus area is on aspects of Advance Concrete Technology (in areas of Concrete Repair & Retrofitting, Sustainable Building Materials & Lightweight Concretes) besides R&D in Structural Engineering areas. Dr. Kong graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree with First Class Honors in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D from NUS. He was awarded the NUS President Graduate Fellowship in 2002 and has worked as a Research Fellow & Engineer in the CEE(NUS)-BCA collaboration R&D Project on “High Strength Lightweight Concrete with and without Aggregates”. Dr. Kong has and is currently serving as Panel Member of the Global Seismic and Dynamic Events in the Institution of Structural Engineers, United Kingdom (IStructE), IES Civil & Structural Engineering Technical Committee Member, Structural Steel Work Technical Committee Member for Structural Steelwork Inspection for Singapore Accreditation Council, Committee Member of the IES-IStructE Joint Committee. Since 2018, Dr. Kong is the Principal Investigator of a R&D Project with a sustainable objective, “Characterization of Ultra-High Performance Cementitious Materials and Optimization of Their Gel Transition Period at High Temperature / Pressure for Applications in Plug & Abandonment (P&A) of Oil Wells” funded by the Singapore Maritime Institute. As of 2019, he is also serving in the RILEM's Technical Committee 273-RAC on R&D of "Structural Behavior and Innovation of Recycled Aggregate Concrete".

MARINE PILING, WHARF DECK AND PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION

In his presentations, emphasis will be given to installation of Concrete Spun Piles, Precast Prestressed Concrete Composite Wharf Deck and Concrete Rigid Port Pavement etc.

SPEAKER'S PROFILE

Er. Dr. Ho Kwong Meng is currently a Council Member of IES, Chairman of IES/ISTRUCTE Joint Committee & Chairman of Overseas Project Technical Committee

During the last 40 years, he has involved in planning, design & supervision of construction of several major seaport projects and a shipyard project in Singapore, a hydraulic boat lock project in Malaysia and involved in due diligence for several overseas seaport investment projects and overseas port planning projects.
