Season's Greetings and Wrap-Up Message from IES President Dear IES members, On behalf of the IES Council, I’d like to extend the merriest of wishes to all of you during this festive season.
Christmas is an annual event commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, celebrated by billions of people religiously and culturally across the globe. It is a time to give thanks, count our blessings, reflect on our work and look forward to the year ahead with new hope and aspirations.
IES has been on an exhilarating ride since the start of 2023. The launch of the IES Green Plan 2030 in January marked a pivotal moment for the engineering community. As the national society of engineers in Singapore, we made a collective institutional commitment to supporting our national imperative – the Singapore Green Plan 2030. It signified a green pledge by the engineering community to journey with the nation in championing environmental stewardship by outlining a strategic roadmap for the integration and implementation of sustainable practices and innovations.
Since then, a myriad of sustainability-centric activities followed, echoing our unwavering commitment to Singapore’s national sustainability agenda. The plan was off to a great start when our Secretariat demonstrated their eco commitments by attaining the Elite tier of the Eco Office Certification for IES and observed the World Water Day to promote wise use of water. Another feather in the cap was the successful renewal of the Green Mark Platinum certification for our Bukit Tinggi premises.
To inspire the younger generation to step forward to embrace sustainability as a way of life and create a sustainable Singapore, IES held its inaugural IES Green Fest in March, the Charles Rudd Distinguished Public Lectures in May and the National Engineers Day in August to excite students about the limitless possibilities in an engineering career.
In November 2023, we convened the global engineering community for the sixth edition of the World Engineers Summit to drive actions against the escalating climate crisis; and celebrated exemplary engineering achievements at the IES 57th Annual Dinner with the presentation of prestigious awards including the inaugural IES Sustainability Awards.
On the international front, IES also forged ahead with our commitment to realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by playing a key role in the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) and by participating in CAFEO 41 in Bali, Indonesia.
All in all, it has been an incredibly productive and successful journey that would not have been possible without your strong support. Thank you for believing in the work that we do. Together, we have made significant strides towards a more sustainable, innovative and impactful future. Let us maintain this momentum as we head into 2024. I would also like to call on our members to introduce your engineering peers and friends, to what IES is doing. Hopefully, they would also become IES members like yourself and participate in IES activities.
Here’s wishing you and your loved ones a delightful festive season and a new year brimmed with love, prosperity and good health! Dalson Chung President The Institution of Engineers, Singapore |
