Toastmasters Interest Group

Introduction

IES Toastmasters Club is an interest group within the Institution of Engineers, Singapore which was formed in May 1991 with about 20 members. Some of its founding members who are still active are Mr. Chan Soon Kwong,

Er. Dennis Wee and Er. APG Menon. The club’s objectives are to practice and hone communication and leadership skills of its members. IES Toastmasters Club is a member of Toastmasters International (TI) USA, a world leader in helping people to become more competent and comfortable in speaking in front of an audience.

New members of IES Toastmasters Club will be given a set of project manuals to complete at his/her own pace. There are 10 projects in the first manual and it covers all the important aspects of public speaking, such as self introdcution, body gestures, vocal variety, speech preparation and techniques to give speeches to inform, persuade or inspire. At the same time, monthly magazines will be sent to members from Toastmasters International. The club’s senior members will provide guidance to new members in their project speeches. Upon completion of the 10 projects, he/she will be awarded a Competent Communicator (CC) title by Toastmasters InternationaI. By then, a CC Toastmaster would have acquired useful communications skills and confidence in public speaking. An interested member who attends the monthly meetings and deliver prepared speeches can hope to become a CC within 2 years. After that, additional prepared speeches from prescribed manuals on various topics lead to the titles of Advance Communicator (AC) with categories of Bronze, Silver and Gold.
